Christine is a natural-born talent, whose brilliant career is foretold by Count Philipp de Chandon - protector and patron of the Paris Opera. At the same time, the management of the opera is taken over by a new manager who takes decisions jointly with Carlotta, an opera diva of dubious charm. The Count asks Carlotta to hear Christine, but the diva offers the girl merely the position of a dresser. Christine accepts the offer with great gratitude and humility. In the privacy of the dressing room she hums in beautiful voice a melody which is heard by Eric. Delighted, he decides to polish up her vocal skills. The lessons are going so well that after a while Christine is ready to attend a new hearing. However, the new management of the opera decides it will take place in a nearby bistro. By the intercession of the Count, the girl showcases her skills, winning over the hearts of the public right away. Moved by the performance, Carlotta immediately offers her engagement in a new production, at the same time setting a trap for her...

Passions, the dialectics of the beauty of soul and music and the moving ugliness of the corporeal clod lead to a series of tensions which, under the circumstances of this story, can no longer be relieved. The mythical curse of a monster locked up in a maze leads to one final - and this is a tragic finale.
