Youth Spaces are points on the map of Lublin created by young people for young people, and co-created by youth. Their operating rules & standards were developed by young people who indicated what features should a given place have to allow youth to spend their free time in an enjoyable way, integrate with their peers, pursue their passions and develop their talents. This year alone, the City of Lublin has awarded subsidies for the launch of seven locations of this type in several city districts.
The first youth space established by the City was “Hej!” at 11 Peowiaków St. which was opened in collaboration with IKEA as part of the “Youth Space” activity within a bilateral initiative called "Youth for the City, City for the Youth - projects and initiatives to engage and act in the local communities” which has benefited from the financial support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through EEA Grants and Norway Grants. Each month “Hej!” is visited by nearly 700 young people who take part in various workshops, meetings and other forms of activity proposed as part of its operations. The success of “Hej!” and the provisions of Lublin’s final application for the European Youth Capital 2023 title greatly contributed to such rapid development of the network of open spaces for young people.
Based on the results of two open competition calls for the design, implementation and evaluation of open spaces for young people - Youth Spaces, subsidies in the total amount of PLN 2.3 m were awarded to:
Together with HEJ!, Lublin has, and will continue the operations of, 8 youth spaces financed from the city budget as part of the European Youth Capital agenda.
